The Ocean and moon spirits:
These ancient and powerful spirits keep balance in the Water Tribe. Known as Tui and La in the spirit world, they are two of the oldest spirits on Earth.
Legend says that the Ocean and Moon spirits premanently crossed over from the spirit world into the mortal world near the beginning of time. They created the oasis in the North Pole and took the form of two koi fish. Over the ages, few have known the Ocean and Moon spirits' tru identities. But when a young lieutenant named Zhao looted an underground Earth Kingdom library, he discovered that the Ocean and Moon were actually the two koi fish. He kept this knowledge a secret for years, knowing it would provide him a strategic advantage if he ever invaded the North Pole, the reason being that Waterbenders draw their power from the moon, and if the moon spirit was destroyed, the moon would cease to exist, rendering the waterbenders ultimately powerless.
Years after Zhao had discovered the identities of the spirits, he organized an attack on the North Pole. During the attack, he captured, and killed the moon spirit koi fish, causing the moon to disappear, giving the fire nation a great advantage over the newly powerless water tribe.
A girl from the tribe named Yue had died as a baby. Her parents brought her to the oasis where the spirits lived, and put her in the water. She was revived, and grew to be a beautiful young woman. She also had part of the life of the moon spirit inside of her, because it had saved her. When Zhao killed the moon spirit, Yue felt that because of this act when she was a child, she needed to do something. Because she posessed a fraction of the moon spirits life, Yue gave her own life, and became the moon spirit. The moon existed once again, and the water benders powers returned.

Origins of earthbending
Badgermoles were the first earthbenders. They are blind, but they use their earthbending to feel the ground and "see".
Badgermoles are a cross between a badger and a mole. They use earthbending to make tunnels and travel underground, where they hunt for prey and live. A little known fact about badgermoles is that they love music. You can play music for them and get them to do just about anything.
